Geting a bucket of corn ..........

.

And BELOW, are a Few Great MEMORIES from the Late 1940's in BUHL , notice the Union Pacific steam engine on the track that used to run thru Green Giant's central yard area. It was removed in 1956 which was the same year the 'new' Green Giant Comapny corn facility was built, including the first all cement warehouse. It was Buhl's 50th Birthday that year !!! Before then 'all' case goods were stored in the old potato cellars and all empty tin cans and lids used during corn harvest were brought in by rail car, which necessitated the U.P. steam engine working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week .

.

Corn Pack in the 40's !!!

.

Pictured BELOW, the potato cellar in the background was later converted to be used as the Green Giant's Ag Shop in the 1960s and early 70s. The Ag shop included an innovative air exhaust system so tractors could be run and worked on inside, and then fitted up for the coming corn pack each year. And we also might add that it was a very nice and cool place to work in during summer heat and easy to heat in the cold Idaho winter !

.

Here is another peek into late 1940's Corn Pack !!!

.

Pictured BELOW, there were No hydraulic lift truck beds in those days ! In fact the first Pup trailer wasn't introduced until 1968. Pictured below you will see the main truck unloading dock . All loads were partially pulled out as the front of the truck was lifted up and in the truck bed a railroad tie was first laid across the front on the bed and large ropes were ran out the back of the truck and attached to a winch or small tractor. Much hand labor and rakeing of the corn was involved. At was a very slow process back then. The first cement Corn Slab was made in 1956 , and is still in use today !

.

And here is another ' Classic '

.

Pictured BELOW. the first mechanical corn harvesters were FMC models mounted on International Harvester Gas-powered tractors , the famous Model M . In those days there were no hydraulic buckets to be pulled behind the TWO ROW corn pickers. And all Green Giant sweet corn rows were 36 inch wide, later changed to 30 inch rows.
